There is something special about living and working around Bayside. Maybe it is the morning walks by the water, the village feel of our shopping strips, the familiar faces behind the counter, or the way a good coffee, a loaf of bread, fresh produce, pizza, pastries or a simple takeaway dinner can become part of your weekly rhythm.
At 23 Degrees Coffee Roasters, we are proud to call this part of Melbourne home. Our roastery is in Cheltenham, close to Bayside and surrounded by the local communities we visit, shop in and love: Hampton, Highett, Brighton, Sandringham, Black Rock, Cheltenham and the streets in between.
We roast coffee, welcome customers, run coffee classes and help people find beans for their home machines. But we are also customers ourselves. We buy bread, fruit, vegetables, meat, coffee, lunch, dinner and treats from local businesses that care deeply about what they do.
The last few years have been difficult for many small businesses and their customers. So, we thought it was time to give a big shout-out to some of the local food and drink businesses we love most — the places that consistently deliver beautiful food, warm service and a genuine sense of community.
This is not a paid guide. It is simply a warm, genuine list of places we personally enjoy and recommend.
Hampton: Local Institutions, Great Takeaway and Everyday Favourites

Paperboy
Cafe
Paperboy has become one of our go-to local cafés in Hampton.
Evan and the team have created the kind of place that feels easy to return to: warm service, consistently good food and a relaxed local feel. It is a great stop for your morning coffee or a quick brekkie after a walk at the beach, and it works just as well for a casual lunch or catch-up with friends.
In our humble opinion, they make some of the best sandwiches and bagels around.
For anyone with a dog, the dog treats are a very clever and generous touch. It is a small detail, but it makes people smile — and it says a lot about how well they understand their local customers.
That is customer loyalty done beautifully.

Marmaris
Turkish takeaway
Marmaris is another true Hampton institution.
This family-run Turkish takeaway has been part of the local community for decades, and you can feel that history in the way people talk about it. Run by Boran and his wife, it is the kind of place that becomes part of your family’s weekly rhythm: reliable, generous and full of flavour.
Their fresh Turkish flatbread is a standout. Soft, warm and made for sharing, it is one of those simple things that makes the whole meal better. Whether you are picking up kebabs, dips, salads, bread or a proper takeaway dinner, Marmaris is exactly the kind of local food business we love.
For the nights when takeaway matters — when everyone is hungry, time is short and you still want something made with care — Marmaris is hard to beat.

Hampton Fruit
Fruit & Veg
A weekend shop along Hampton Street would not feel complete without stopping at Hampton Fruit Centre.
Currently run by John and his team, this much-loved local greengrocer has been part of the Hampton community for decades. From what we understand, it is a multigenerational family business, built by the generation before and carried forward with the same commitment to quality, care and personal service. It is one of those everyday local institutions that helps make Hampton feel like Hampton.
It is our go-to for fresh flowers, fragrant herbs, beautiful fruit and exceptional-quality vegetables — the kind of produce that makes you want to cook properly when you get home.
Hampton Fruit Centre also holds a special place in our story, as one of the first local businesses to stock 23 Degrees coffee. That early support meant a lot to us, and it is one more reason we have such a soft spot for this Hampton institution.
Address:Â 331 Hampton Street, Hampton VIC 3188

Lamont's Fine Foods
Gourmet butcher
A good local butcher is worth knowing, and Lamont’s Fine Foods in Hampton is one of those places that locals return to again and again.
Serving Hampton with premium meats and questionable banter for the last 30 years, Lamont’s has become much more than just a butcher. It is the kind of place where quality matters, the service feels personal, and there is usually a laugh thrown in for free.
They are known for great meat, helpful advice and those excellent sausage sizzles that bring people together in the best possible way. Lamont’s is exactly the kind of food business that helps create a sense of community: practical, generous, full of character and proudly local.

The Wicked Tomato
Pizza
Every neighbourhood needs a great local pizza place, and for us, The Wicked Tomato is our go-to for some of the best pizza in Bayside — well, in our humble opinion.
It is the place we think of on those evenings when you do not want to cook, when you are sharing pizza with friends and family, or when one of those balmy Bayside evenings by the beach simply begs for a pizza. Their pizzas are always fresh, ready in no time, good value and no fuss.
The Wicked Tomato is one of those small local businesses that simply does what it does really well: wicked good pizzas.

Brighton: Artisan Bread, Japanese Favourites and Long-Time Locals

Phillippa's
Artisan Bakery
Phillippa’s is one of those Melbourne food businesses that feels deeply woven into the local community.
Founded by Phillippa Grogan in Armadale in 1994, Phillippa’s has built its reputation on traditional baking, quality ingredients and food made properly. Their Brighton store has now been part of the local community for more than two decades — true locals, we call that.
We have been loyal customers for years, especially for their rye bread. It is the kind of bread you keep going back for: honest, consistent and made with care. Just as memorable is the welcoming atmosphere Rene and Vanessa have created — warm, familiar and genuinely local.
For us, Phillippa’s is a reminder of why artisan food businesses matter. They do not just sell bread. They preserve craft, create habits and make a neighbourhood feel a little more like home.

Akaba
Japanese Restaurant
Bayside has such a wonderful mix of flavours, and a great local Japanese restaurant is always worth knowing about.
Tucked slightly away from plain sight on Bay Street in North Brighton, Akaba is easy to miss if you do not already know it is there. We were introduced to this local gem by friends — locals, of course — and it quickly became one of those places we are very happy to know about.
If you are visiting Bayside and craving sushi, sashimi or a relaxed Japanese meal, Akaba is a go-to. Their seafood is beautifully fresh, the sushi and sashimi are generous, and the presentation always feels considered without being fussy.
The premium sushi and sashimi platter is the one to try. It is fresh, beautifully prepared and exactly the kind of dish that reminds you how good simple food can be when the quality is there.
Akaba is one of those local restaurants that quietly delivers, again and again.
Address: 293 Bay St, Brighton VIC 3186

Royale
Burger joint
When it comes to burgers around Bayside, we have to admit it is a close call between Burger Bae in Sandringham and Royale.
Royale Brighton has long been one of those local burger names people know. Tucked behind Church Street, is one of those places that proves good food does not need to be complicated. Sometimes it just needs to be a really good burger, done well.

Sandringham: Beachside Burgers, Italian Favourites and Farmers’ Market Mornings

Baia Di Vino
Mediterranean Dining
Baia Di Vino in Sandringham is one of those beautiful local spots that feels special.
With its stunning setting in Sandy Village next to the bay, warm hospitality and attentive service, it is the kind of place that works just as well for a special occasion as it does for a catch-up with friends or a larger group celebration in their private dining room.
What we love most is their fresh-forward approach to Italian food. The menu lets quality produce speak for itself — seasonal and full of flavour without being fussy. Their burrata is to die for, and paired with something from their excellent wine list, it is exactly the kind of meal that makes you want to slow down and enjoy the moment.
Baia Di Vino feels very Bayside to us: relaxed but considered, welcoming but quietly special, and built around good food, good wine and genuine hospitality.
Address: 1 Melrose St, Sandringham VIC 3191

Bayside Farmers' Market
The Bayside Farmers’ Market at Trey Bit Reserve in Sandringham is another of our local favourites - and it is dog friendly!
Usually held on the fourth Saturday of each month from 8am to 1pm, it brings together fresh produce, artisan food, local makers and neighbours in a beautiful beachside setting. It is a lovely way to spend a Saturday morning: grab a coffee and a pastry from one of the many stalls, pick up fresh produce, talk to growers, support small producers and wander through the market.
There is often music, and sometimes farm animals on display, which makes it a lovely outing for families as well as anyone who simply enjoys a relaxed market morning.
Markets like this are a reminder that food is not just about convenience. It is about connection — to growers, makers, seasons and the local community.

Black Rock: The Croissant Detour Worth Making

Flavours
Pâtisserie & Café
The best croissant prize, in our very unofficial local guide, goes to Flavours Pâtisserie Café in Black Rock.
Founded by Christopher, Flavours is one of those local businesses where you can feel the craft behind the counter. It has that lovely mix of skill, charm and temptation — the kind of place where you should absolutely stick to your shopping brief, otherwise you may walk in for one croissant and leave with half the patisserie. Yes, it is that good.
Known for its French butter croissants, pastries, cakes, tarts and cosy café feel, Flavours makes choosing just one thing almost impossible. Their croissants are the reason we keep going back: buttery, beautifully layered and exactly what a weekend treat should be. But the real danger is the cabinet. Everything looks like it deserves to come home with you.
Flavours is a lovely reminder that great local businesses do not just sell food. Christopher and his small team create little moments of joy — one pastry box at a time.

Highett and Cheltenham: Bread and Freshly Roasted Coffee

The Flour House
Artisan Bakery & Cafe
If you love beautiful bread, The Flour House in Highett is a local gem and a good alternative to Phillippa's.
Run by Damian and his team, The Flour House is one of those bakeries where you can feel the craft behind everything they do. They mill their own grain in-house, sourced from local Victorian farms, and turn it into wonderful artisan breads, pastries and baked goods made with real care.
Their Highett bakery has become a favourite for anyone who appreciates bread made properly — with patience, skill and quality ingredients. And with locations now also in Hampton and soon in Sandringham, even more locals can enjoy what they do.
It is bread with a story, and you can taste the difference.

3 Graham Road, Highett VIC 3190

23 Degrees Coffee Roasters
Coffee Roasters
Of course, we also have to include our own little corner of the neighbourhood.
At 23 Degrees Coffee Roasters in Cheltenham, we roast specialty coffee beans in small batches for home espresso, filter coffee, offices and wholesale customers. You can buy freshly roasted coffee beans directly from our roastery, bring your own container, ask for help choosing beans for your Breville or other home coffee machine, or book one of our hands-on coffee classes.
We run BYO coffee machine classes, Breville coffee machine training, barista classes and coffee tasting classes for people who want to make better coffee at home.
For us, coffee is not just about what ends up in the cup. It is about people, sourcing, community, learning and doing business in a way that feels right.

Supporting Local Feels Good
Small businesses help give Bayside and its neighbouring suburbs their character.
They remember your order, know your dog’s name, recommend something new, support local suppliers, employ local people and make our neighbourhoods feel alive.
So next time you are in Hampton, Highett, Brighton, Sandringham, Black Rock, Cheltenham or nearby, consider choosing local.
Buy the bread. Have a coffee. Pick up the fruit and veg. Visit the butcher. Try the sushi platter. Order the pizza. Book the dinner. Wander through the farmers market. Pick up freshly roasted coffee beans.
It all makes a difference.
Thank you for reading and for supporting local.
With thanks,
Tina
