BRAZIL, Mantiqueira de Minas, Farm Fazenda Fortaleza
Microlot, Natural, Drying Patios, Yellow Catucai, 1300 MASL
SEED TO SIP:
23 Degrees recently visited the women coffee growers of the APAS cooperative. Under the project ‘Flores em ação’ (Flowers in action) women coffee growers of the cooperative are encouraged to harvest, process and market their own microlot coffees, thereby receiving the recognition and direct remuneration for their passion, dedication and skills in producing specialty coffee. One of its women coffee producers is Ana Claúdia.
This tiny coffee producing farm of only 1 hectare is located in the Ferreiras District of the region of Mantiqueira de Minas in the southern part of the state of Minas Gerais. Nowadays this region is one of the most awarded regions in Brazil due to its natural beauty, pleasant climate, fertile soils, altitudes between 1000 and 1400m and its tradition of producing specialty coffees with surprising diverse sensory profiles.
Ana Claúdia married Johnny Borges, who came from a family of coffee growers, and was inspired by other female coffee growers and friends to step out into the limelight and showcase her own coffee. Ana decided to produce her own microlot of 120 kilo of coffee. And we are glad she did. The result is amazing. For Ana this coffee does not only mean generating her own income but more so obtaining recognition for her skills and dedication in producing a wonderful specialty coffee which customers appreciate. Through the opportunities specialty coffee creates, she sees a future for her children to continue the line of coffee growers in her family.
